Posted in Playstation Hacks Tagged console hacking, dvd, playstation 2 Post navigation Regardless, it’s as simple a hack as you could possibly ask for – burn the disc, and away you go! It reminds us fondly of the Sega Saturn hack exploiting the MJPEG interface. It’s not yet a fully-polished piece of code, and notes that additional work may be required to get the exploit working on all firmware versions of the console. After finding potential overflow targets in the code, it was possible to exploit these to run unsigned code.

Thus, ’s search began in the code of the on-board DVD player software. The only burnable media the PS2 DVD drive will normally read comes in the form of DVD video discs. Instead, sights were set on using the only other way in to the console – through the DVD drive. Hacked memory cards, network interfaces, and other trickery were ruled out. The goal was to find a way to run unsigned code on the PlayStation 2 without using any complex external hardware. ’s new hack may come many years after the PlayStation 2 has since faded from store shelves, but remains impressive nonetheless. Of course, finding workarounds can sometimes be more of a marathon than a sprint. Aiming to stop users from playing pirated games as well as running homebrew code, hackers often race to find vulnerabilities shortly after each new launch. So that's my reasoning. For many generations, home consoles have featured copy protection. The forum posts I read about EVO still having the media player were a bit old. And on top of all that for all I know the more recent releases of EVO may have shut down the ability to even do the memory card exploit or have gotten rid of the media player like the other versions have. I've read in some 2 year old posts that ARMax EVO carries the media player but the cheapest I can find that is on eBay for $40. I could buy one but from my research it's getting hard to find a copy of ARMax that actually has the media player necessary for the exploit. Partially because getting the SLUS number and editing in Notepad sounds a bit too complicated but mostly because I don't own a copy of ARMax that has the media player. I thought no one was going to reply! I have looked into that option using the PS1 game exploit but in the end I decided against it. Sorry if this has been answered before but after many, MANY searches I just couldn't find it.Īlso, if anyone has any ideas to make my plan more simple or anything I'd be happy to hear it.Ĭlick to expand.Hi gam3r21. I will then add the ISOs to the hard drive by using WinHiip.Īfter I first add the Noobie exploit to my MC, will I then have to run SwapMagic and THEN the Noobie package disc (or at least a burned disc of ULaunchELF) in order to boot from my memory card EVERY TIME I want to run HDLoader and play a game off my hard drive? I'll run SwapMagic, swap over to the Noobie package disc and then run that to add the exploit to my memory card.

Next I will burn the Free McBoot 1.8b Noobie Package (which includes HDLoader.elf) from SKS Apps to a CD-R or DVD-R (I'm using this method instead of loading the Noobie Package onto a thumb drive because from my research it appears that SwapMagic 3.6 cannot access thumb drives directly). I don't want to get 3.8 Coder because I've read that it has compatability and other issues. I've decided to go the softmod route by running HDLoader.elf via a memory card exploit.

I've been looking into modding my PS2 so that I can run ISO backups of my games off of the PS2's hard drive.
